Purdue Fort Wayne’s Men’s Volleyball Team Suffers Loss Against Ranked Ohio State

Purdue Fort Wayne lost tonight in four sets against #10 ranked Ohio State. Set scores were 25-23, 16-25, 32-34 and 19-25.

The Mastodons fought hard tonight against a difficult opponent but were unable to get over the hump. Late in the third set, PFW looked like they could pull away to take a 2-1 set lead, but they eventually lost the lead in the set and Ohio State closed out the set before going on to win the match.

Jon Diedrich led all players in kills with 20 for the Mastodons. Teammates Mark Frazier and Bryce Walker were not far behind with Frazier getting 14 and Walker totaling 11.

Ohio State’s kill leader was Jacob Pasteur who totaled 19 kills.

Two areas that PFW struggled in tonight, that ultimately led to their loss, were serves and attacking.

PFW had 4 aces but totaled 20 service errors. Ohio State doubled PFW’s ace total by scoring eight aces and only errored on 12 serves.

While not as big of an area of concern, PFW did have struggles in attacking. PFW had 24 attacking errors while Ohio State had only 19. Ohio State also had a better hitting percentage where they hit .289% compared to PFW’s .264%.

Although PFW is struggling in MIVA play, they have had a successful season so far. In total the team is 10-3 with two of their three losses coming against MIVA rivals. PFW can improve to .500 in MIVA play in their next game if they can beat Ohio State.

With tonight’s win Ohio State extended their win streak to four games and improved to a 10-3 record. Their next game will be on the road Saturday against Loyola Chicago.

The Mastodons next game will be Saturday at 7 PM at home against #11 ranked Ball State.

Purdue Fort Wayne’s Softball Team Loses Big Against Miami Ohio

Purdue Fort Wayne’s softball team loses 0-12 against Miami Ohio, in a game that was called after the top of the 5th inning.

The Mastodons had lost five straight coming into today’s matchup, but this loss was the teams biggest. They allowed their largest run total of the season, and the team did not have a single hit. The only time PFW made it on base was through two walks and one error.

PFW pitcher, Gracie Brinkerhoff, allowed eight runs in three innings pitched. Her ERA for the day was 13.33. Alanah Jones relieved Brinkerhoff, and allowed four runs to be scored in one inning. Three runs were from her pitching and one runner was left from Brinkerhoff. Her ERA was 15.00.

Miami was great from the plate hitting four home runs as a team and totaling 12 hits. Allie Cummins had a game to be remembered as she hit 3/3 with all her hits being home runs. The team did all of this while only batting in four innings.

PFW needs to improve at the plate if they want to see any success this season. Through six games, the team’s batting average is .121, they have only gotten on base from hits 16 times, and they have only scored one run. Through these six games their opponents are batting .327, have 49 hits, and have scored 39 times.

PFW’s pitching has been bad too, as a team PFW’s ERA is 6.54. The team has only thrown 11 strike outs so far this season.

With the win Miami moves to 3-2 on the season. Their next game is Friday Feb. 24th where they will have a double header. The first against Bellarmine and the second against Murray State.

PFW drops to 0-6 on the season. Their next time out is also a double header. This double header will be on Friday. They will first play Rhode Island at 12:30 and then Georgia State at 5:30.

Purdue Fort Wayne 2023 Baseball Season Preview

Purdue Fort Wayne’s baseball season begins this week, as the Mastodons travel to Montgomery, Alabama to face Alabama State.

Last season, their first in the Horizon League, the Mastodons finished with a total record of 18-36 and a 13-15 record in conference.

The Mastodon’s are led by Head Coach Doug Schreiber, who is in his 4th season with the team. Schreiber brings back his entire coaching staff for this season.

PFW looks to grow from last year as they bring back two star players, Cade Fitzpatrick and Rex Stills. Fitzpatrick is a senior catcher, who was a member of the second team All-Horizon League team last season. Stills is a sophomore pitcher, who was a member of the 2022 Freshman team All-Horizon. Jacob Meyer, a senior pitcher, also returns this season. Meyers was awarded pitcher of the week on April 12.

In 2022 the Mastodons had many achievements. The team had their most wins and their first tourney appearance since 2016. They won at least once game against every team in the Horizon League. The team hit 49 home runs, which was the 2nd most in PFW history. PFW pitchers threw for 369 strikeouts, this was the 3rd most in school history. The team also had a huge win over Michigan who was the 2022 B1G Champions.

After having a big win against Michigan last season, PFW will hope to do well in big matchups against IU, Michigan St., and 6th ranked Wake Forest.

Purdue Fort Wayne Women’s Basketball Team Falls at Home against Cleveland St.

Purdue Fort Wayne Women’s basketball team extends their losing streak to three games in loss against Cleveland St.

Although PFW were behind all game, they fought back in the fourth quarter to make it close. The Mastodons outscored CSU 25-16 in this quarter.

PFW was led in scoring by Shayla Sellers who scored 21 points. She also picked up four rebounds and one assist.

CSU’s Destiny Leo led all scorers with 31 points. She is currently scoring 18.6 points per game.

CSU dominated in rebounds throughout the game gathering 52 compared to PFW’s 30. They also had the edge with offensive rebounds by bringing down 19 compared to PFW’s 9.

Amele Ngwafang and Brittni Moore had great rebounding games. Ngwafang grabbed 19 boards and Moore collected 13.

PFW’s highest rebounder was Aubrey Stupp who had 7.

Another area where the Mastodons struggled, was their shooting. They shot 36.9% from the field and 18.2% from deep. CSU had better shooting percentages in both areas, shooting 41% from the field and 27.6% from deep.

PFW needs to improve their shooting because this has been a problem in recent games. It is hard to win games when your opponent is shooting far better than you.

CSU moved to 24-3 on the season. They remain in the lead for the Horizon League. Their next game will be at home Thursday against Northern Kentucky.

With the loss, PFW moved to 10-16 on the season. They now sit at 6th in the Horizon League. Their next game looks to be against an easier opponent, as they will play the 5-21 Wright State Raiders. This game will be played Thursday at 5 PM at home.

PFW Men’s Basketball Team Falls at Home vs Youngstown State University

Purdue Fort Wayne men’s basketball team faced off against Youngstown State University in a Horizon League matchup last Friday night at the Coliseum. After a poor shooting performance all around, PFW lost 72-81.

As a team, PFW shot 41.9% from the field and 34.8% from deep. YSU shot 53.4% from the field and 26.7% from deep.

While PFW’s three-point percentage does not look that bad at the end of the game, it was worse earlier as they were shooting 12.5% from deep at the half. This failure to connect from range was a big reason they lost their lead early and never got it back.

Towards the end of the game, PFW dug deep and made the game competitive. With almost 3 minutes left in the game, PFW had cut their deficit to seven and were playing with a lot of momentum, but eventually they were forced to foul YSU. At this point YSU was in the bonus and would be sent to the line each time they were fouled. PFW would hope for missed free throws so they could have a chance to get closer, but YSU kept converting their chances.

Although the Mastodons walked away with a loss, Jarred Godfrey had an excellent performance that saw him total 33 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

YSU’s Dwayne Cohill matched Godfrey’s scoring total as he led the Penguins. Cohill also totaled five rebounds and three assists.

While PFW lost the game, there were still some good things in the night for the Mastodons. During timeouts in the game, two PFW pep band seniors and one PFW cheerleader were honored for their time spent at the school.

Another special moment for PFW came at half time, where 18 members of PFW’s Honors Program received their Honors Pins which marks the halfway point of the program.

With a win, YSU improved to 20-6 on the season. They sit atop the standings in the Horizon League. Their next game is tomorrow at Cleveland State.

With a loss, PFW fell to 15-11 on the season. The Mastodons are 7th in the Horizon League. Their next game is Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. EST at home against Robert Morris University. This is an important matchup for both teams because if PFW loses Robert Morris will move into a tie for 7th with the Mastodons.

Purdue Fort Wayne Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Maryville on the Road

Purdue Fort Wayne men’s volleyball team continues their winning streak by defeating the Maryville Saints.

The Mastodon dominated the Saints, winning three straight sets: 25-17, 25-19, and 25-17.

Senior Jon Diedrich led the team with ten kills. Sophomore Mark Frazier was just behind him with nine. Caden Klingbeil led the Saints in this statistic with nine.  

Sergio Carrillo, a graduate student for PFW, had a great game with 19 assists. PFW’s opponents were led in assists by David Fleischer, who had 14.

The most impressive stat of the game was the difference in total of aces between both teams. PFW had ten aces compared to Maryville’s two. PFW junior Bryce Walker had five aces, Diedrich had four, and senior Carlos Mercado had one.

This win increases PFW’s winning streak to eight games and increases their record to 9-1.

Maryville drops to 2-7 on the season. Their next matchup will be at home versus Central State University.

The Mastodons next game is Friday at 8pm Est in St. Charles, Missouri against Lindenwood.

This will be PFW’s first MIVA matchup of the season. They will hope to carry on with this win streak against their 7 upcoming conference opponents.

PFW Baseball Team Players Receive Horizon League Honors

Purdue Fort Wayne’s Baseball team saw four of their players receive Horizon League honors this week. These honors were awarded by Perfect Game USA, a website that focuses on scouting college baseball.

The first of the players that received acknowledgment by Perfect Game USA was Jarrett Bickel, a senior infielder/pitcher. He was picked as Preseason All-Conference Shortstop for the Horizon League.

Bickel hit .262 last season for the Mastodons and had 20 extra base hits. He will look to build on this performance in his senior year with the team.

Bickel was again acknowledged by Perfect Game USA as #5 on their list of 2023 Horizon League MLB Draft Prospects.

Joining him in the 2023 Horizon League MLB draft prospects ranking is graduate student JD Deany, a pitcher for the Mastodons, who is ranked at #11. Next on the list for the team is junior pitcher, Mac Ayers, who is ranked at #19.

The last of the players that received acknowledgment was Enas Hayden, a sophomore pitcher, who was #6 on the 2024 Horizon League MLB draft prospects ranking.

The Mastodons will hope that these players, who are projected to be stars, will step up and lead the team to a good season.

The Mastodons first game will be Feb. 17 in Montgomery, Alabama against Alabama State.

PFW Men’s Volleyball, on a six-game winning streak, faces George Mason today

Purdue Fort Wayne men’s volleyball team has started their season off hot with a 7-1 record. The Mastodons next game is today at 7:30 p.m. on the road against George Mason.

This is the second match of the DC challenge played in Fairfax, Virginia. The team has yet to start conference play but hope to do better than last season, where they finished 6th in the MIVA.

The Mastodons are currently on a six-game winning streak. These wins have come over Carthage, Missouri S&T, Harvard, Sacred Heart, Queens and Mount Olive.

Each win this season, for PFW, has been decided in three sets.

PFW’s only loss this season was to NJIT on Jan. 7. This loss was decided in three sets.

The Mastodons have outperformed their opponents in nearly every stat this season. While looking at the attack, they have had 287 kills compared to their opponents 265 while only having 108 errors compared to their opponents 136. In the set they have 269 assists compared to their opponents 253. For serves the team has 45 aces and 91 errors while opponents have been held to 29 aces while serving 114 errors.

Defensively the Mastodons have collected 183 digs to their opponents 177. Blocking has seen six solo blocks and 125 assisted blocks while their opponents have had six solo blocks and 87 assisted blocks.

The only stat that the team does not lead their opponents in is blocking errors. PFW has had ten errors in this category while their opponent has only had eight.

PFW is led by Ryan Perrotte. This is Perrotte’s 8th season in the position. Assistant coach Jim Palilonis returns for his second season.

This year’s schedule sees the Mastodons face off against multiple big schools. They will face Ohio State twice due to them being a MIVA rival. Other big matchups include UCLA and Penn State.

Purdue Fort Wayne Women’s Basketball Season Heading into February

Purdue Fort Wayne women’s basketball team is currently 9-13 on the season and 6th in the Horizon League with a 6-6 record in the conference.

The Mastodons are led in scoring by junior guard, Amellia Bromenschenkel so far this season. Bromenschenkel is averaging 12.9 PPG while shooting 45.6% from the field and 37% from three. This PPG average has Bromenschenkel sitting at 8th on the Horizon League scoring leaderboard.

Bromenschenkel not only leads the team in PPG, but she also leads the team in boards per game with 4.9.

Shayla Sellers, a senior guard, leads the team in assists with 2 per game. She also leads the team in steal per game with 1.8.

Jazzlyn Linbo, a sophomore forward, leads the team in blocks with 1.3 per game.

PFW’s biggest win so far this season was the first game of the season where they beat Goshen College 90-45 on Nov. 7. The biggest loss that the Mastodons have suffered so far this season was to the number 15 ranked Maryland on Dec. 21, where they were beat 51 to 88. This game featured a matchup of PFW’s Shayla Sellers and her younger sister, Maryland’s Shyanne Sellers.

PFW is currently on a three-game winning streak which saw a 72-55 win over Wright State, a 73-64 victory over Oakland, and most recently a 69-45 win over Detroit Mercy.

The team will look to continue this streak tonight as they face off against Youngstown State at home.

The last time these teams matched up in Ohio, PFW lost 44-60. The team will look to have a better performance in this rematch against their 2ndranked opponent. Depending on the result and the result of the Northern Kentucky and Wright St. matchup tonight, PFW may be able to move into a tie for 5th in the Horizon League.

Purdue Fort Wayne men’s basketball season heading into February

Purdue Fort Wayne men’s basketball team is currently 14-9 on the season and are sitting at 6th place in the Horizon League with a 6-6 conference record.

The Mastodons have been led in scoring this season by senior guard, Jarred Godfrey, who is averaging 16.2 PPG while shooting 39.5% from the field and 33.3% from three. This average has Godfrey sitting at 7th in PPG in the Horizon League.

Godfrey not only leads the team in points, but he also leads the team in assists with 3.8 per game, steals with 1.5 per game, and blocks with .5 per game. These stats show that the ball is commonly in his hands which has led to his team leading 3.1 turnovers per game.

The Mastodon’s rebound leader is senior forward, Ra Kpedi, who leads the team with 8.3 boards per game.

The 2022-2023 season has seen some big milestones for the team. Back on Nov. 27, Coach Jon Coffman became PFW’s program leader in wins with 143 following a big win over Bluffton. Jarred Godfrey set the programs record for games played on Jan 21 where he played his 142nd career game.

PFW’s biggest win so far this season was a 111-31 win over Manchester on Nov. 11. The teams biggest lose came on Dec. 21 in a 54-74 loss to Northern Kentucky.

PFW’s last game resulted in a 74-79 loss to Cleveland State last Friday. The team will look to rebound tonight on the road against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies.

Back in December these teams matched up in Fort Wayne which saw a 79-73 overtime win for the Mastodons. The team will hope to gain the same result so they can move to 7-6 in the conference and move into a tie for 5th with Oakland.
